Why books, babes and waves? Well, it’s my life’s dream to be home with my kiddos and nurture their love of learning: I’m a former middle school English/social studies teacher with experience teaching in three countries: the U.S., Taiwan and Bermuda. I have my bachelor’s degree in middle school language arts education and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with a focus in literacy. I’ve worked with a wide range of students: struggling and reluctant readers, some of whom walked into my classroom kicking the door as they entered, and advanced students who have sat international exams two years early and passed.
Now, I’ve embarked on a new adventure as a stay-at-home mom of two boys (3 and 7 months), raising them on my island home of Bermuda.
This blog has been created for numerous purposes (and the reasons are presented in order of personal importance):
To share my love for reading, learning and my kiddos with the reading public
Sharing books, a love of reading and a drive to learn with my kiddos is a passion of mine. I guess this comes with being a teacher. This year, I am going to begin homeschooling (the reason for that will be another post altogether) my oldest for preschool. This blog will share the journey of educating at home, our favourite reads and how I aim to promote a love for literacy.
To serve as a record of my time at home with my boys
I’ve always wanted to take time to journal and record special moments as a mom; however, as a working mom, this has often proved to be a challenge. This will be the venue where I log our struggles and adventures and post pictures to help me remember these precious moments.
To improve myself as a writer
As a middle school English teacher, who has closely followed experts such as Kelly Gallagher, I always required my students to write extensively and always wished that I, too, had the time to freewrite and improve my craft. The grading, planning and other tasks that come along with teaching never allowed me the time to write for pleasure. Now, with a few extra moments on my hands, I plan to write and grow myself as a writer. Hopefully, when I return one day to the classroom, I’ll be able to share my growth and journey as a writer with my students.
To provide me with a space to reflect and process
This point is self-explanatory. The postings on my blog will cover a variety of topics and at times, will contain my musings and rambling thoughts as I aim to process them.
Join me as I document our homeschooling journey and continue to explore good books!
