Why books, babes and waves?
Taking time off from teaching (at a brick and mortar school) to spend time with my kiddos, and nurture their love of learning, has always been a dream of mine. Because,
I love learning. And as it turns out, I love teaching, and have discovered teaching my own kids to be quite a blast!
I’m a former middle school English/social studies teacher with experience teaching in three countries: the U.S., Taiwan and Bermuda. I have my bachelor’s degree in middle school language arts education and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with a focus in literacy.
I’ve worked with a wide range of students: struggling and reluctant readers, some of whom walked into my classroom kicking the door as they entered, and advanced students who have sat international exams two years early and passed.
Now, I’ve embarked on a new adventure: being a stay-at-home mom of two boys (4 1/2 and 22 months), raising them on my island home of Bermuda. I decided to create the blog for the following reasons (let’s not mention the fear of going brain dead and being bored from being with my kids 24/7.
To share my love for reading, learning and my kiddos with the reading public
In a prenatal class, a nurses gave the best advice: read to your kids (especially your boys) before they fall in love with a ball. We took her advice, and now I have two bookworms. And I’m an English teacher. So we love books. This blog will share the journey of educating at home, our favourite reads and how I aim to promote a love for literacy.
To serve as a record of my time at home with my boys
This will be the venue where I log our struggles and adventures and post pictures to help me remember these precious moments.
To improve myself as a writer
As a teacher who has closely followed experts in the field, such as Kelly Gallagher, I always required my students to write extensively and always wished that I, too, had the time to freewrite and improve my craft.
The grading, planning and other tasks that come along with teaching never allowed me the time to write for pleasure. Now, with a few extra moments on my hands, I plan to write and grow myself as a writer. Hopefully, when I return one day to the classroom, I’ll be able to share my growth and journey as a writer with my students.
To provide me with a space to reflect and process
